How to clean a monitor screen

Turn the display off, wipe with a dry microfiber cloth, and if that is not enough, dampen the cloth slightly with distilled water. That is the whole method. Everything that goes wrong in screen cleaning comes from adding something to it: paper towels, window cleaner, alcohol, or pressure.

The short version

  1. Turn the display off. Smudges and dust show far better against a dark, unpowered panel, and you cannot accidentally press anything.
  2. Start dry. Wipe gently with a clean, dry microfiber cloth in wide strokes. Most dust and fingerprints need nothing more.
  3. Dampen the cloth, never the screen. For what remains, slightly dampen the cloth with distilled water. Liquid sprayed at the screen runs into the bezel and the electronics below.
  4. Dry and verify. Follow with a dry section of the cloth, then fill the screen with white and look for remaining smears at an angle.

A screen is easy to clean and easier to ruin, and the difference is entirely in what you bring to it. The panel itself wants almost nothing: a soft cloth, occasionally a little pure water. The damage comes from treating it like a window.

Why screens are not glass

The front of a modern monitor or TV is not bare glass. It is a stack: polarizers, films, and on most panels an anti-glare or anti-reflective coating a few molecules thick on the outermost layer. That coating is what household glass cleaners attack. Ammonia and strong solvents dissolve it unevenly, and the result is a permanent smeared patch that looks like the very smudge you were trying to remove, except now it cannot be cleaned off, because it is not on the screen anymore. It is the screen.

The same stack is why pressure matters. An LCD is a liquid layer between thin sheets; pressing hard enough to distort the image is pressing hard enough to risk the cell structure underneath. If a mark does not come off with gentle passes, more force is not the answer.

The method

Work with the display off. A dark panel shows dust and fingerprints far better than a lit one, which turns the job from guesswork into inspection.

Start completely dry. A clean microfiber cloth in light, wide strokes handles most of what accumulates on a screen, because most of it is dust held by static and skin oil that microfiber lifts readily. If the cloth has been used before, wash it without fabric softener; softener coats the fibers and turns a cleaning cloth into a smearing one.

For anything that survives the dry pass, dampen a corner of the cloth with distilled water, barely past dry. Distilled matters more than it sounds: tap water carries minerals that dry into the faint white ghosting you have seen on shower doors. And the water always goes on the cloth, never the screen, because sprayed liquid obeys gravity, and directly below the panel's bottom edge sit the electronics.

Stubborn oily marks sometimes want a purpose-made screen cleaner. Read its label for the absence of ammonia and alcohol, and apply it the same way: cloth first.

Verifying the work

This is the step most people skip, and it is the reason the tools on this site exist. Fill the screen with pure white and look across it at a shallow angle. The flat field removes everything the panel is doing, so what remains is what you missed. Then do the same on black, which reveals the oily smears that disappear against white. Two passes of inspection take thirty seconds and catch what room lighting hides.

Common questions

Can I use window cleaner or alcohol on a monitor?
No. Most monitor and TV panels carry anti-glare or anti-reflective coatings, and ammonia and strong alcohol attack them. A stripped coating shows as permanent blotches that no amount of further cleaning removes, which is a worse problem than any fingerprint.
Why microfiber and not a paper towel?
Paper products are made of wood fiber, which is harder than it feels and leaves fine scratches with every pass. Microfiber splits into strands finer than the dirt it lifts, so it traps particles instead of dragging them across the glass.
How do I check that the screen is actually clean?
Fill it edge to edge with white and look from an angle. A white field removes every variable, so anything you still see is on the glass. Doing the same on black catches the oily smears that white hides.
