Pink screen

A pink screen is a display filled edge to edge with pink. It is used as a flattering fill light for video and photography, as a backdrop or accent for streaming setups and parties, and to check how well a display reproduces saturated tones.

Shades, tints and tones

Every step is generated from #FF2D92. Click a swatch to copy its hex.

Shades of pink

A shade is the base color with black mixed in. Shades read as deeper and more dramatic, and they are what you reach for when a color needs to recede or carry weight.

Tints of pink

A tint is the base color with white mixed in. Tints turn pastel as they lighten, which makes them useful for backgrounds and for anything that has to sit behind text.

Tones of pink

A tone is the base color with grey mixed in. Tones lose the shout without losing the hue, and they are usually what separates a considered palette from a loud one.

The pink scale

The same color as the 50 to 950 ladder every CSS framework uses, with #FF2D92 at 500. Click a step to copy its hex, or take the whole scale as variables for a design system.

Color schemes built on pink

Harmonies are positions on the color wheel rather than matters of taste, which is why they keep working across very different designs.

Complementary

Two colors from opposite sides of the wheel. They make each other look more vivid, which is why the pairing is used for anything that needs to stand out.

Analogous

Three neighbours on the wheel. Nothing competes, so the result reads calm and settled, closer to how colour behaves in nature.

Split complementary

The base plus the two colors either side of its complement. It keeps most of the contrast while being much easier to balance.

Triadic

Three colors spaced evenly around the wheel. Strong and lively, and usually best with one dominant color and two accents.

Tetradic

Two complementary pairs, forming a rectangle on the wheel. The richest scheme available, and the hardest to keep from shouting.

Monochromatic

One hue at different lightness levels. Effortlessly cohesive, and the safest way to build a palette around a brand color.

Contrast and readability

Whether pink works as text, and what to put on top of it when it is the background. Ratios follow WCAG 2.1, where 4.5 is the bar for body text and 3 for large text.

3.48:1 · Large text only

Body text at 16 pixels. A flat field of color removes every variable, which is what makes it useful for judging a display.

Used the other way round, #FF2D92 as a background takes #000000 text. That is the higher-contrast of the two, and it is what the tool picks automatically for any chrome sitting on your color.

Pink reads better on a black background of the two. Contrast is a property of the pair, not of one color, so a color that fails here can still be perfectly usable against a different partner.

About pink

What this color does, where it works, and what it reveals about the screen showing it.

What pink is

Red and blue together, with green either absent or partly present depending on the shade. Magenta is the full-strength version. Pink is the same mix lightened, either by lifting brightness or dropping saturation.

Where it works

Anything pointed at a person. Beauty photography, streaming setups, and the lighting of nearly every bar that wants its customers to enjoy their own reflection. It also works as a party wash and an evening glow at low brightness.

How it reads

Pink carries more cultural baggage than any other color and almost none of it is fixed. It read as masculine until the 1940s. Now it reads as playful, young and deliberately unserious, which is precisely why it is used to signal exactly that.

On a display

Strong pinks and magentas sit near the boundary of what many panels reproduce faithfully. Look for banding, blotchiness, and color drift where one side leans red and the other purple. Budget panels fall apart here before anywhere else.

Why it flatters

Human skin already contains a great deal of red, so a light that leans pink enhances what is there rather than fighting it. Green light makes people look ill, blue makes them look cold, and pink mostly makes them look like themselves on a good day.

Getting it right

Place it to one side and slightly above eye level, and turn the brightness down until it tints the shot rather than taking it over. Straight-on pink at full output looks like a filter. A gentle pink from the side looks like a decision.

Common questions

Why is pink used as a light for video?
Pink sits close enough to the warm side of skin tones to look flattering rather than alien, while being colored enough to add atmosphere. A soft pink fill is much kinder to faces on camera than green, blue or plain white.
What is the difference between pink and magenta?
Magenta is the full-strength mix of red and blue with no green. Pink is essentially magenta lightened, either by reducing saturation or adding brightness. Both come from the same two subpixels.
Is a pink screen useful for testing a monitor?
Yes, as a check on saturated color handling. Strong pinks sit near the edge of what many panels can reproduce, so banding, blotchiness or a drift toward red or purple across the field all show up clearly.
Can I use this as a light for taking photos?
A phone or tablet showing pink makes a good soft accent light for close-up and portrait work. Keep it off to one side rather than straight on, and turn the brightness down until it tints rather than dominates.
