Terms of use

Using ColorScreens means accepting what follows. It is short on purpose.

Using the site

ColorScreens is free to use, for anything, including commercial work. You do not need permission to use a color, a palette, a hex code or a contrast result you found here, and you do not need to credit the site. Color values are facts, and facts are not ours to license.

The one thing to avoid is republishing the site itself, meaning copying its pages, its written explanations or its layout to run somewhere else.

Accuracy, and its limits

Considerable care goes into the color data. Values marked as CSS keywords come from the CSS Color Module and are normative. Values marked as common conventions have no standards body behind them and vary between sources. Everything derived is computed in sRGB with a D65 white point.

Even so, the site is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. Two things in particular are worth understanding.

  • Screens lie. An uncalibrated display, a night-shift filter, an ambient light sensor or a wide-gamut panel will all show you something other than the value stated. Nothing shown here can be treated as a measurement of your particular screen.
  • CMYK is an approximation. A screen emits light and a press applies ink. Any conversion between them depends on paper, press and profile, so treat printed values as a starting point rather than a specification.

Contrast results follow the WCAG 2.1 formula and are arithmetically correct, but passing a threshold is not the same as being readable. A ratio knows nothing about font weight, letter spacing or the room you are sitting in. Use your eyes as well.

Display testing

The screen colors are useful for spotting dead pixels, stuck pixels and backlight problems. They are not a diagnostic instrument, and no result from this site should be treated as proof of a fault or as grounds for a warranty claim on its own.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, ColorScreens and Kinsey Street Online Marketing are not liable for any loss arising from use of the site, including decisions made on the basis of a color value, a contrast score or a display test.

Availability

The site is offered without any guarantee that it will keep working, keep its current features, or stay online. Pages and tools may change or be removed.

Changes to these terms

These terms may be updated, and the date at the top reflects the last substantive change. Continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the revised version.
